The Leicaflex SL2, The Leica R Fleet Expands....
The Leicaflex SL2, Leitz's last in house SLR and unlike popular opinion, it wasn't the M5 that nearly killed Leitz, granted rangefinder fans didn't get the greatness of the M5 but that's not why we're here. Trying to sell an overengineered SLR for twice the MSRP of a Nikon F2 or Canon F-1 at a loss, left us with a small series of cameras. I've held my brother's R6.2 in my hands and shot an R4 in the past, Doesen't feel the same.
Compared to the SL, the SL2 has some minor changes, the film advance lever looks like it came from the M4, in the viewfinder you can see both the shutter speed and aperture, which is something you only see in high end cameras. The camera body itself is a little slimmer than the SL otherwise, they are pretty much similar. My 50th Anniversary SL2, sadly has a dead meter. Not the end of the world, I have a Doomo Light Meter D that fits nicely in the cold shoe on top of the prism and I get great exposure. The shutter works great and I can't complain.
I chose Bergger Pancro 400 as my test roll for the 50th Anniversaray SL2, had two left, I exposed at 200 ISO and processed in Adox FX-39 1+9. Yup, Pancro 400 is still a grainy film but it has character and dynamic range you get with a dual silver layer. I have no idea if Bergger is going to manufacture more. Inventory dried up early on in the pandemic and what I shot with expired I think back in 2023, so, still good. Any have any idea if they are still planning to make film or just focus on photographic paper?
