Scarborough Wander Part One

Image
My friend Art Liem, known him for years, first through the Analog Photography Users Group and more recently with the Toronto Film Shooters Facebook Group, long floated an idea of a photo walk in Scarborough starting at Kennedy Station and wandering west and exploring The Golden Mile District. It's a part of city I have not explored.  Now I packed my Canon New F-1 AE and leaned heavy on my L Series FDn 20-35 F3.5 Zoom and 50 F1.4 lens. Film wise, I reached into my fridge for some first generation Harmon Phoenix 200 packaged in the red box. The colours are far from accurate but that was the point. I wanted all over the place look for this walk.  Canon New F-1 AE, FDn 50 F1.4 lens, FDn 20-35 F3.5 Zoom lens.  Film: Harmon Phoenix 200 @100 ISO First version in the red box.

A Hidden Gem, the Guildwood Estate

Image
A few weeks ago I meet up with fellow Classic Camera Revival hosts Alex Luykx, John Meadows and James Lee at the Guildwood Estates on brisk but very sunny Sunday morning on the first weekend of Spring.  I've never been to Guildwood Estates, it's located towards the east end of Scarborough south of Kingston. There used to be hotel at one time but that got torn down with the main building remaining being an event facility that was booked solid with weddings in the before times. But that's not why we went. The Guildwood Estates is also home to archtectural details from buildings long gone in downtown Toronto. In the 1950s the city went on a tear pulling down old office buildings in the financial district and slowly replace them with new sky scrapers from the international or modernist school. Nothing wrong with modernism but a lot of old character.  Guildwood Estates is the echo memory of these old buildings what were part of Toronto's landscape prior to 1950 and a metaph...

Bluffer's Park

Just got back from my two week stay in the Beaches. Had a blast and one weird moment but we won't be talking about that. One thing I wanted to shoot badly was the Scarborough Bluffs, humour me, I'm a west ender and never been here before. I was blown away at what I saw, if you have never been to the Bluffs before it's a neat spot in the city. The other cool thing is the small year around houseboat community in the marina, something you don't see in Southern Ontario too often. On a bright sunny morning, my guess I should have come earlier but I had to walk Rufus first, oh well. There's always next time, I should come in the fall when the leaves have changed colour. I would pack a neutral density filter to deal with the latitude, metering the sandstone was a bit of a challenge. Camera: Asahi Pentax KX, SMC Pentax-M 50 f1.4 lens. SMC Pentax-K 28 f3.5 lens.
