Fujifilm Pro 400 H, a Swansong in Four Parts.

Image
I had four rolls of expired Fujfilm Pro 400 H left, the first one shot walkind down Broadview surveying the TTC Street Car Track replacement project which seems to be on schedule. Still it feels odd walking down a major north/south street in Toronto that's closed for major work, it's a lot quieter. Seeing how streetcar track is laid is quite interesting, the TTC uses steel railway ties, shimmed underneath with what looks to by styrofoam to ajdust track level, and all that gets covered with concrete and hopefully it lasts for a good 20-30 years (fingers crossed).  Fujifilm Pro 400 H was the only real competition for Kodak Portra 400 and a lot of wedding shooters who shot film were upset as hell when Fujifilm discontinued the emulsion (believe whatever excuse/conspiricy you want). I bought a couple of rolls of my friend Trevor Black who was selling his film stash off.  Shooting expired film can be a crap shoot and this case, like a roll I shot a few months ago through one ...

Fuji Pro 400H, Gone You Say? Pity

Image
I was gifted two rolls of Fuji Pro 400 H this past Summer by my friend Ori Carmona, and I immediately put them into the fridge for the fall. Fuji continued its product line thinning out by discontinuing their only pro film stock in both 35mm and 120 this past year. At the same time the product manager at Kodak Alaris responsible for Portra saw their carefully planned production forecasts tossed out the window. Maybe it will come back, maybe not. Either way if you wanted to know why Portra 400 was thin on the ground for much of 2021, this is one of them.  From personal experience Pro 400 H isn't really a 400 ISO colour film, I figure its true speed is around 250 ISO and that's what I shot both rolls you see here. The end results required very little work in post other than cropping and dust removal. I do hope Fujifilm brings this film back, to my understanding it was an ingrediant or two that was too hard to source, again another reason why Kodak colour films were hard to find...

Early August in the Beaches Part Three

Image
I'm not done posting Beaches images just yet. Shooting colour negative (c-41) film is a nice change of pace from black and white and the Beach neighbourhood is full of colour. I shot most of these images south of Queen St., my next post will hight light images images on the north side of the street and deep into a neighbourhood ravine. Funny how I just blink my eyes and it's towards the end of August already. I'm still not done with Summer, the official rollover into fall is not for another month. Did anyone else have any interesting adventures on staycations? Got something planned for the next two weeks? A technical note, both film stocks I used are factory rated for 400 ISO, I deliberately overexposed at 250 ISO to get more punch with the colour, C-41 film has very wide latitude and I have seen results of Portra 400 exposed at 100 ISO with little change.
