Fun with Kodak Ultramax 400 in the Beaches

Image
I love Kodak Portra 400, it's an amazing colour film, but I wanted to try out the lesser expensive option, it goes by different names, in this case from B&H as Ultramax 400. To my understanding it's also sold under the Lomo brand through the Lomographic Society. It's nice film, I love the punch of colour and didn't require much adjusting in Lightroom. Last week I showed you what Ektar 100 looks like on a miserable day, now we see what the inexpensive C-41 film looks like. By and large I'm happy with the results save for challenge with the 50 f1.4 lens I used on March break, I was getting an uneven exposure, at first thought you would think it was a shutter issue but I just got this camera overhauled but it wasn't happening with every shot, definitely not when I was shooting portrait as opposed to landscape and not on every landscape shot either. I'm going to look at getting getting the lens serviced. I'm not one for tossing out out old glass if ev...

March Break in the Beaches

Image
The standard rule of thumb when shooting with Kodak Ekar 100 colour film is it loves bright sun. This past March Break I didn't get a lot of that while house sitting in the Beaches at my brother's place. I went out on I think Tuesday, the light looked pretty good so I loaded up my camera with some Kodak Ektar 100, a colour film that leans towards a saturated look. Well, mother nature had other ideas as I walked further east along the boardwalk. I like what I got out out of this series. What you see here is the winter art installation along the Beaches, design students come up with seasonal shelters to build around the lifeguard chairs and they get dismantled towards the end of March. The rope structure was particularly interesting as I got to play with my new macro lens with the rope shots. One thing I did notice in some frames the film was not being exposed evenly. My Nikon F2SB was recently overhauled and was worried it was a shutter issue, but it was only with certain s...

Weekend Retreat off the Beaten Path.

Image
Somewhere between Huntsville and Algonquin Park on Bella Lake is a small piece of paradise. My long weekend road trip took me to Billie Bear Lodge , a family owned cottage resort that acted as our base for photographic expeditions.  What I love about this place was the fact it is off the beaten path, in this case Highway 60.  The first thing I did when I got out my car in the parking lot, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and just listened. I was up there during low season, it was quiet, as in you don't hear civilization quiet and that is an addictive quality when coupled with your surroundings. My friends showed up shortly after I arrived and we took over the lodge at the resort and made dinner Friday night. I have a soft spot for places like Billie Bear Resort, the accommodations are rustic but that's what I like about it. Camera: Nikon F3HP, various Nikkor lenses Film: Fuji Pro 400H
