Toronto Film Shooters 10 Anniversay Meet Up Guelph Edition and Nikon S2 Test Drive.
GAS hit hard this Summer, and one should be careful around the Used Gear Departments at Burlington Camera and Downtown Camera respectively. I never thought I would wind up with Nikon S Mount rangefinders in my collection. I got the S2 pictured here from Burlington Camera and an SP (grail camera) from Downtown Camera (blog post coming up once I shoot a test roll).
The Nikon Rangefinders were Nippon Kogaku's taking the Contax series of rangefinders from Zeiss Ikon, rolling with a much simpler horizontal shutter (cloth in the S2 and titanium in the later SP just like the Nikon F). I wound up getting a 35 F2.5 and the P.C 105 F2.5 lenses to form a kit.
Having owned a Contax IIIa 15 years ago, holding the NIkon S2 in my hands felt like coming home to some degree, while the form factor is similar, Nippon Kogaku took from the Leica M3 the film advance lever and the much simpler horizontal shutter. The shutter speed button is in the same spot as on the Nikon F. Unlike the later SP, the rangefinder is geared for 50mm exclusively, if you're planning to shoot with the 35mm lens, or the 85, 105 or 135, you need an accessory viewfinder for framing. Not the end of the earth. This camera is a keeper stay tuned for the SP and its test roll on a future post.
Camera: Nikon S2 Rangefinder, Nikkor HC 50 F2 lens.
Film: Adox CHS 100 II, FX-39 1+9.
